Charles (Chuck) Sylvester Uhling

Charles (Chuck) Sylvester Uhling was born on January 8, 1928, in Burbank, Washington. The youngest of eight children of Lorenze and Jessie Belle Doty Uhling. He attended Burbank grade school and graduated from Columbia High School in Burbank. In January 1946, he was drafted into the Army, then in April 1946, basic training at Camp Polk, Louisiana. Charles attended Cryptography School at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. He served in the Army of Occupation at 8th Army Headquarters at Yokohama, Japan. He was discharged in April 1947 due to a reduction in forces.

Graduated from WSC, now WSU, in June 1951 with a BA in Business Administration. His folks’ farm at Burbank was taken by the Government because of the building of McNary Dam. Charles spent the next year taking his folks around Eastern Washington, Eastern Oregon, and Northern Idaho looking for a suitable place to relocate. Then in 1952, they purchased a farm West of Walla Walla. Charles farmed the land for them until he went to work at the Walla Walla District of the Corps of Engineers in the finance and accounting branch. He was appointed Finance & Accounting & Disbursing officer in 1977.

On March 9, 1985, he married Norma D. Coleman at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Walla Walla. Charles retired in 1988 from the Corps of Engineers.

They purchased a motor home and traveled to Branson, Missouri, Nashville, Yellowstone, Crater Lake, Grand Canyon, and other places. They made many trips to the Casinos in Nevada, Wildhorse, and the Spokane area. They attended the Grandchildren’s sporting events from grade school through High School.

Charles is survived by one sister-in-law, Marjorie Uhling; one stepdaughter, Donna (Jeff) Mahan; four stepsons, Harold (Madge), William (LaWayne), Bobby, and David (Lisa) Neissl; two special grandchildren, Drew (Ashley) Mahan and Lindsey (Andy) Schantz; several step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; seven brothers, John, Raymond, Tucker, William, Lawrence, Marion, and T. Richard; one sister, Frances Halverson; and stepson, Ronnie Neissl; one brother-in-law; and two sisters-in-law.

He was a life member of the VFW Post 992, Eagles Lodge #26, Senior Citizens, AARP, and St. Patrick Catholic Church, where he served as an usher for many years. He was a member of the Walla Walla Farmers Co-op and a Former member of Walla Walla Grain Growers.

A Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be held on Thursday, December 8, 2022, at 6:00 PM, at the Chapel of the Herring Funeral Home, 315 W. Alder St., with Nick Moramarco officiating. The Funeral Mass will be held Friday, December 9, 2022, at 10:00 AM, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 425 W. Alder St., with Father Dale Tuckerman celebrating.
