Charles Albert Lincoln

May 13, 1939 — March 27, 2016

Walla Walla

Charles Albert Lincoln was born in Havre Montana on May 13th, 1939, to Ervin and Annie Lincoln. Charles, known to those who loved him as ‘Charlie’ or ‘Chuck’, fell in love with classical music and the electronics that brought it to him when he heard his first broadcast on a home built radio. His blossoming love of Physics took him to Montana State University where he met his true love, Irene Westervelt. Marrying Irene after college and taking a winter honeymoon in Yellowstone National Park, Chuck's adventurous journey had just begun!
Chuck and Irene moved to the East Coast for employment at SUNY Fredonia in 1964 and continued his studies to receive his Doctorate of Science in physics, applied mathematics and aerospace engineering at UVa in 1969. Charlie expanded on and built out a small 2 bedroom house in Dunkirk, NY, that he coined ‘Cedar’s East’, where he and Irene raised three boys, Todd, Robb, and Scott, with faithful dog Motor. Charles' 17 years of teaching Physics at SUNY Fredonia focused on the promising area of field effects at very large and very small scales. With Lincoln roses climbing split rail fences and the small orchard and garden to supply their table, Chuck and Irene regularly hosted foreign students from Africa and China to share the Thanksgiving holiday table. Chuck helped build and establish Harvest Chapel Methodist Church, creating a lifetime of friendships along the way. An exchange teaching trip to Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, England for 9 months in 1973 only increased Charlie’s desire to learn more about Astronomy and Ancient Man. The family relocated to Walla Walla, Washington in 1980 where Charles taught at Whitman College, WWCC, Walla Walla College, and tutored before his increasing health concerns forced a full disability retirement due to chronic pain. Chief, a perfectly untrainable and equally affectionate golden retriever, was a constant companion to him through this time.
Charles was respected in the community as a gentle man with a generous heart who walked the path he felt Jesus led him on. His disciplined life of constantly seeking to serve others through inventions and electronic creations never stopped after his teaching days officially ended. He leaves behind a loving family that will desperately miss his laugh and hugs and softly spoken, ‘oh punkin’. He is survived by his brother Jack, his sister Barbara, wife Irene, his three sons, their wives Lindy, Glenda and Jolene, and his adored grandchildren Gillian, Conor, Kaeden, and Torin.
Memorial services will be held at 2pm, April 30th at St Paul's Episcopal Church in Walla Walla.
Memorial contributions may be made to Habitat for Humanity or the Charles A. Lincoln Scholarship Fund through the Herring Groseclose Funeral Home.
