Walla Walla

E. Carole (Brown) Pennell, age 85, passed away Tuesday, July 4, 2017, at Park Manor Rehabilitation Center with family by her side.

Carole was born October 27, 1931, to Merle and Evalyn (Jones) Brown at the Prescott home. She graduated from Prescott High School in 1950, and married Lee Pennell on November 18, 1950, in Walla Walla. She and Lee farmed at Prescott and the Dry Creek area of Milton-Freewater.

Carole enjoyed growing up on the Brown family farm at Prescott. She was an accurate marksman. She enjoyed swimming in the Touchet river, riding horses, riding the farm pigs (for which she was disciplined), known for holding ducklings a little too tight and spending time with her Grand-daddy Brown.

Carole was a 1950 Southeast Washington Fair Farmerette. She was active in community organizations. She was a Blue Bird leader, Sunday School teacher and 4-H leader while her daughters Vickie and Yvonne were involved. She was president of the Pleasant View Homemakers and later president of the Walla Walla County Homemakers Advisory Council in 1966. She served as a foods judge at the Walla Walla Fair. She was president of the Prescott Aurora Club in 1973 and a charter member of the Prescott gardening club.

Carole and Lee enjoyed vacationing in the surrounding mountains, especially the Wallowa Mountains. These were horse and mule pack trips with family and friends with an abundance of great stories as a result. In later years they traveled with their 5th wheel camp trailer often returning to Wallowa Lake and the Oregon Coast. Carole also became an active
golfer.

Carole was preceeded in death by her husband; her parents; and her sister, Deloris (Don) Ford. She is survived by her daughter, Vickie (Richard) Piper of Milton-Freewater, daughter, Yvonne Pennell of Westminster, CO; grandchildren, Johnna (Tyler) Backhaus, Seth Piper, Heidi (Joshua) Flores, and Casey Stiller.

Funeral services are to be on Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the Chapel of the Herring Groseclose Funeral Home. Viewing and visitation will be held on Monday from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
