Carlotta Iza Schafer

Carlotta was born May 23, 1922 in Milton, Oregon to Firman J. & Annabel Sheldon Nelson. She passed away on February 4, 2013 at Park Manor.

After the death of her parents, she was raised by her aunt, Mrs. Angie Burroughs. Carlotta attended Walla Walla schools, graduating from Walla Walla High School in 1940 and completed nurse’s training at St. Mary’s School of Nursing in 1943 as a Registered Nurse. She practiced her profession for 30 years as an office nurse and as a surgery R.N. at St. Mary’s Hospital.

Carlotta married Michael H. Schafer in Tampa, Florida on January 14, 1944. She was a member of Assumption Catholic Church, St. Mary’s School of Nursing Alumni Association, Lady Elks, Senior Citizen’s Center, Assumption Church Ladies and Walla Walla Pioneer & Historical Society. Carlotta made & donated children’s clothing to several charity organizations.

Carlotta is survived by grandson, Michael M. Schafer; nephew, Richard Schafer; niece, Joan Beck; also several cousins including Howard P. Smith of Waitsburg, WA, Jill Wood of Starbuck, WA and Lassie Wittman of Rochester, WA. She was preceded in death by her husband; son, Michael John Schafer; daughter, Patricia Ann Schafer; 2 brothers, Ben Nelson & Philip Nelson and 1 sister, Anna Nelson Milleron.

Viewing & visitation will be held on Thursday, February 7, 2013 from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the Herring Groseclose Funeral Home, 315 W. Alder, Walla Walla, WA. The Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, February 8, 2013 at 1:30 PM at Assumption Catholic Church with Father Tyler Smedley, Celebrant. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association through funeral home.
