David Burgess was born the youngest of five children to Halsey and Emma Burgess of Lowden on June 11, 1939, where he was raised on the families’ ranch. He attended Lowden Elementary and Walla Walla High School, graduating in 1957. David continued his education at Washington State College, joined Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, was active in ROTC, and earned a degree in Ag Econ. He graduated in 1961. David married high school sweetheart, Janet English, in 1960. After college David was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant in the Army. In 1963, he returned to Lowden to farm the family ranch.
Leaving the area in 1968, David joined the Federal Land Bank Association in Spokane. Several career advancements moved him and his family throughout the northwest, ending in Boise in 1981, when David took a position with the Farm Credit Administration in Washington, D.C. Returning to the northwest and the Federal Land Bank in 1982, the family settled in Spokane for the next decade where he was active in the community and able to nurture his love of the Washington State University Cougars. After retirement he and Janet returned to Walla Walla where he joined Baker Boyer Bank. At the end of David’s career he owned an appraisal business, retiring in 2011.
David loved to spend time at the family cabin at Kooskooski in the Blue Mountains with his children, grandchildren, and many friends. He and Janet enjoyed traveling with friends and family around the world. David was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, Rotary Club, Lions Club, the Walla Walla Country Club, and Cougar Club. He loved people, never forgot a name, and was a man of high integrity, generosity, and love for his family.
David is survived by his wife, Janet, and children Brian (Milton, GA), Beth Price (Olathe, KS), Brenda SerVoss (Florence, MT), and seven grandchildren.
