Betty Lou Hull

Beloved mother and community activist Betty Lou Brittenham Hull passed away on April 3, 2016, at the Park Manor Rehabilitation Center in Walla Walla.
A Christmas baby, Betty was born in Lind, Wash.,on Dec. 25, 1926, to Charles Henry Brittenham and Ruby Sutton Brittenham. After her youth in Lind,she graduated from Annie Wright High School in Tacoma.
Over the years, Betty attended Whitman College,Walla Walla College and Washington State University,earning a bachelor of arts degree in psychology and a fifth year teaching accreditation.
With her husband, Philip Hull, she raised daughter Phyllis Ann Hull Petersen (Larry) and sons Brooks Hull (Annette) and Evan Hull, who survive her. She is also survived by Phyllis’ son Lance G. Petersen. Betty, Philip and family lived in Lind and Spokane before coming to Walla Walla in 1960.
Betty taught fourth grade at Berney School in Walla Walla for 10 years and worked at the Blue Mountain Action Council an additional 15 years until retirement.
In retirement, she taught writing classes in the Walla Walla Community College Quest program.
Betty defined herself by her friends and her community activism. She helped found and served as president of the local chapter of the National Organization
of Women, as well as serving as its Eastern vice president at the state level. She served as president of the American Association of University Women. She was for a number of years precinct committee officer for the Walla Walla County Democratic Central Committee and was active in local and state politics.
She was proud to be a member of the local chapter of the Colonial Dames of the XVII Century and enjoyed researching family genealogy. She participated in several book groups and writing groups. She was well known for her skill with origami, which she also taught as a volunteer.
Loved by friends and family, we all will miss her. Betty was laid to rest at Mountain View Cemetery in Walla Walla.
A celebration of Betty’s life has been scheduled for Saturday, May 14 from 2-4 p.m. in the Dining Space, Main Building D, at the Walla Walla Community College. Memorial donations could be made to the Walla Walla Community College Quest Program, Washington Talking Book and Braille Library, or a charity of your choice through the Herring Groseclose Funeral Home, 315 W.
