Betty was born on October 20, 1931, to Virgil Dale and Myrtle (Wallis) Brown in Walla Walla, WA, and was raised in Touchet, WA. She graduated from Touchet High School in 1949 and attended Kinman Business College in Spokane, WA.
On June 24, 1954, she married James Henry Appling in Walla Walla, where they lived and raised three children.
She was a member of Pioneer United Methodist Church, Church Women United (both local and state), Zonta International Service Club, and Past President. Eagles Aux. #26, Walla Walla County Fire Dist. #4 Auxiliary, and known as the Weight Watchers Lady, having worked for them for 37 years.
Betty and Jim loved to travel and enjoyed cruising the Inside passage in Alaska and the Panama Canal. They traveled across the United States many times.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, René and Dave Simmons, Vancouver, WA; son and daughter-in law, Dan and Barb Appling, San Tan Valley, AZ; brothers, Wallis Brown of Walla Walla and Earle and Martha Brown of Clearwater, FL; cousin, Carol Warnberg of Olympia; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many dearly loved nieces and nephews. A special thank you to her niece, Kathy Rohde, who has been her companion, caregiver, and friend.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim, in 2016; her son, Chuck, in 2007; her grandson, Jeff Jorgensen, in 2014; and her sister, Frankie Weed, in 2018.
Following a Private Family Burial on Monday, June 23, 2025, a Celebration of Life and reception will take place at 11:00 AM at Pioneer United Methodist Church.
