Betty Sue Adams

May 2, 1933 — June 17, 2015

Betty Adams of Walla Walla passed away on June 17, 2015, at Providence St. Mary Medical Center. She was 82.

Those who knew Betty appreciated her friendliness and sweetness. She truly enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She loved telling stories and never tired of laughing with others.

She was born Betty Sue Brown on May 2, 1933, in Jefferson City, Mo., and moved to Spokane in 1936. She graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in Spokane in 1951 and attended Whitman College, where she met her husband, Gene. Betty left Whitman in order to marry Gene, a soldier in the U.S. Army. They married Sept. 17, 1953, and lived in Bampton, Oxfordshire, England, for a year when he was in the service.

After returning to the U.S., Betty and Gene lived in Odessa, Wash., and then in the Seattle area before making their home in Walla Walla in 1968. A dedicated member of Walla Walla Presbyterian Church, she treasured the friends she made there. She was proud to be a member of the Delphians Book Club, which she joined in 1992. She was a Girl Scout leader for her daughter Janine’s troop, and served as a volunteer at the Blue Mountain Humane Society Gift Shop. She worked for many years as a bookkeeper at Tallman’s Drug.

She is survived by her husband, Gene; as well as son, Scott, of Walla Walla; son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Margaret Adams of Brisbane, Australia; and daughter, Janine Adams and son-in-law Barry Marcus of St. Louis. She is also survived by her two grandchildren, Miranda Adams, 20, and Taylor Adams, 18, of Australia. She also leaves behind her sister-in-law, Gwen Gerow, of Walla Walla. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Joe and Jeff Brown, both of Spokane.

The family internment will be followed by a public memorial service at 3 p.m. on June 24 at Walla Walla Presbyterian Church, 325 S. First Ave. A reception will follow in the church Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, Betty requested memorial contributions be made to the Walla Walla Presbyterian Church.
