Almira Louise Seubert

October 10, 1919 — October 5, 2015

Almira Louise (Primus) Seubert, 95, a longtime resident of Cottonwood, ID, died peacefully at Montgomery Home Care in Walla Walla, WA with family by her side on October 5, 2015.

She was born October 10, 1919, near Mohler, ID to Louis Jacob “Louie” and Winifred Almira “Winnie” (Black) Primus. In 1927, her parents, sisters and brother moved to the Primus homestead near Nez Perce, Idaho where her dad farmed. She and her siblings rode by horseback to Evergreen Country School, a one-room schoolhouse. She attended Nez Perce High School until the beginning of her senior year at which time she transferred to Lincoln High School in Seattle, WA so she could help her aunt and uncle with their young family. The fall of 1937, she attended the University of Washington and later received her teaching certificate from the University of Idaho where she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority.

Miss Primus taught grade school in Cottonwood and it was there she met John W. Seubert, her husband of nearly 60 years. They were married June 2, 1941 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Spokane, WA and made their home in Cottonwood. She was a devoted wife supporting Johnny when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II, during his 32 years as a partner in the Hoene Hardware in Cottonwood, and during their years as operators of the Cottonwood Butte Black Angus Ranch. She was a very organized homemaker and her cooking, sewing and gardening skills made a wonderful home for her family. Whenever possible, she would be with Johnny whether out on the ranch, on their travels or with family and friends.

She was a devoted mother who made sure family always came first and home was a place to which they could always return. Her keen sense of humor and wisdom was a treasure to her family. She enjoyed the beauty of the outdoors especially on the Camas Prairie and the Selway River area. She was an accomplished pianist, and there were many family memories of Johnny being entertained with her music and their four daughters singing.

Almira had a very deep faith and was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Cottonwood where she was a past member and Prefect of Christian Mothers. More recently, she was a member at Assumption Catholic Church in Walla Walla. Throughout her life she stayed current on the news and maintained her support of the Republican Party.

During Johnny’s lengthy illness, she was a courageous caregiver and strong presence for him. Following his death December 21, 2000, Almira remained on the family ranch until September 2003 when she moved to Walla Walla so she could be closer to immediate family. For seven plus years she lived in a duplex close to her daughter, and then moved to Park Plaza Retirement Residence for three more years. The last year and a half she lived at Montgomery Home Care under the kind care of Lorelie and Chuck Montgomery.

She is survived by three of her four daughters, Sharon (Ed) Anderson of Walla Walla; Diane (John) James of Spokane Valley, WA; Patsy Seubert (Brad Thomas) of Boise, ID; son-in-law, Larry Hooker of Walla Walla; 10 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. She is also survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Bob Schultz of Seattle, WA; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Dick and Pat Seubert of Shelby, MT; sisters-in-law, Dolores (Mrs. Herbert) Seubert and Dolores (Mrs. James) Seubert both of Cottonwood, ID and by many beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. She was predeceased by her husband; a daughter, Sally Hooker; her parents; a brother, Kenneth Primus and a sister, Betty Jean Shoemaker.

The funeral Mass will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, October 15, 2015 at St. Francis Catholic Church, Walla Walla, WA with Father David Gaines officiating. A rosary will be recited at 1 p.m. on Friday, October 16, 2015 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Cottonwood, ID with Monsignor Andrew Schumacher officiating. Graveside services will follow at the Cottonwood Catholic Cemetery.
