Joseph Anthony Herres
(May 18, 1929 - April 22, 2012)

Joseph Anthony Herres was called back home by his heavenly father on April 22nd, 2012 at the age of 82. Joe passed at Providence St. Mary’s Medical Center, surrounded by his family, after a bout with lung cancer.

Joe was born in Pomeroy, Washington to Michael P. & Maria Kucklick Herres on May 18th, 1929. Joe was one of 10 children and he worked on the family farm in Pomeroy until 1941 when his mother and father moved to Walla Walla. He graduated from St. Vincent Academy in 1947 which later was named St. Patrick’s Catholic School. Joe and his brother Mike took up farming in the Sudbury area. Joe finally was called by “Uncle Sam” to serve in the Korean War.

After returning from Korea, Joe married Geraldine Poyser in January, 1954 in Milton-Freewater, Oregon. In 1960 Joe bought his own ranch in Lowden, Washington where he raised cattle, pigs, wheat, alfalfa, barley, corn and four wonderful daughters. Joe was named Walla Walla County Cattleman of the Year in 1966. He served as President of the Washington Cattle Feeders Association from 1974 to 1976. He served as a Director of the Walla Walla Cattleman’s Association and the Blue Mountain Beef Feeders. Joe also served 2 terms as President of the Sudbury Farm Bureau. He was a former member of the Eagles, Elks, Knights of Columbus, and the Gardena Seed Growers Association. Joe was very active in the 4-H & FFA Livestock Auction at the fairgrounds on Labor Day weekend. Joe enjoyed spending time with his daughters & grandchildren, going to Wildhorse with his longtime companion Dorothy Kelly and taking trips to Reno and Las Vegas. He enjoyed fishing.

Joe is survived by his daughters Geralyn Ostrin of Salem, OR, Mary Eisele (Charlie) & Michelle Hager (Mathew) of Walla Walla, JoAnn Moody of Columbia, SC, a sister Sister MaryAnn Herres of Spokane, WA, a brother Richard Herres of Pomeroy, WA, sister-in-laws Audrey Herres & Frances Roth of Walla Walla, Marilyn Herres of Fairfield, WA, 11 grandchildren James, Joseph (Heather), Jeremy & Jackie Ostrin, Bobby & Whitney Eisele, Chris, Hank & Emilianne Hager, Krysten & Gregory Moody, 3 great-grandchildren Owen, Lyla & Noah Ostrin, numerous nieces and nephews and his longtime companion Dorothy Kelly. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 infant daughters, his former wife, his brothers Mike, Leonard, John, Herman, Ferd, Hugh & Jim and several nieces and nephews. As per Joe’s request there will be no funeral service. There will be a celebration of his life at the home of his daughter, Mary Eisele, 1425 Tull Dr, Walla Walla on Saturday May 12 from 1PM to 3PM. The family encourages anyone who knew Joe to attend. Any donations may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice through the Herring Groseclose Funeral Home in Walla Walla.
